Twas the night before Christmas and all through the warehouse

Last year, there was something on my husband’s holiday wish list that I never thought I’d ever see… a pair of UGG® Classic Short Boots!

This year, I plan to do my holiday cooking in a pair of Cherry Patent Dansko clogs. And I’ll be whipping up the delicious recipe listed below. At my house, this is Santa’s favorite recipe. Happy cooking!
Pumpkin Bread
1 1/3 cups vegetable oil
5 eggs
1 can (16 ounces) pumpkin
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 packages (3 ounces each) instant vanilla pudding mix
1 cup chopped nuts
Grease 2 large 8×4 loaf pans and set aside. Mix oil, eggs, and pumpkin in mixing bowl. Beat well. In separate bowl, sift together flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and baking soda. Add to pumpkin mixture and mix until blended. Stir in pudding mix and nuts. Pour into prepared loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Makes 2 loaves.

Autumn is my favorite season; it’s filled with countless sensory delights. Right now I’m going to focus on just one of many – it’s harvest time. I have been digging in the dirt all summer and now it’s ti
me to reap the fruits of my labor.
Anyone who gardens knows that good shoes are paramount. I need a shoe that’s not only easy to slip on and off, but also easy to clean. Most importantly, I’m looking for something that will protect my feet and give me good support. Gardening is not always leisure activity. I spend long hours standing and digging. There’s always a shovel involved. Luckily, I have access to good shoes. And they make all the difference. I have two favorites.
The first is the Dansko Pippa. Dansko is already one of my favorite shoe brands. It’s the best shoe for work, especially when standing for long hours. Last Spring, Dansko came out with a gardening clog – the Pippa. Rather than leather, this style is made of a lightweight plastic compound that’s simple to clean. While almost all footwear manufacturers have abandoned US production for to capitalize on the low cost of offshore production, Oregon-based footwear brand, Keen, is bringing manufacturing back to the states. In 2010, Keen opened a production plant in Portland, Ore., home of their corporate headquarters Currently, the company also manufactures cargo bags at a California factory and socks in North Carolina.
James Curleigh, CEO of Keen, explains. “The numbers do stack up. Seventy percent of our new business is still domestic and 100 percent of our new category in steel-toed boots and work boots is domestic. So transportation alone; we’re in the U.S. for the U.S. market.” Keen used the launch of their casual and steel-toe utility boots to start bringing jobs home.
“When you think about a category of steel-toe, you think about built in America; you think about Americans building things,” Curleigh says. “By building a factory here in Portland, Ore., we were able to say we completely understand labor dynamics, overhead dynamics, the shift from manual to automation. And as a result … when we speak to our other sourcing partners, we’re much more educated to be able to make better decisions in the interest of cost reduction and quality improvement.” Curleigh also says that his company has been growing by more than 30-percent a year, partly due to decisions to open manufacturing facilities at home versus overseas.
For Keen, it’s not just about the bottom line – it’s about making a difference in the world we live in. In fact, part of Keen’s company ethos is to “care for the world around you.” John Curleigh and executives from 13 other companies, as large as Intel and as small as Lincolnton Furniture of North Carolina, joined President Obama at the White House earlier this year to discuss the need for more production jobs in the United States. On companies creating jobs and keeping them on our home turf, President Obama said, “Not just because it’s increasingly the right thing to do for their bottom line – but because it’s the right thing to do for their workers, for our communities, and for our country.
